Master of Architecture
The Master of Architecture course addresses the timely and pressing issues of our age and our profession, in an enquiring, sophisticated, creative, ethical, inclusive, material and architectural way. Through research-led project-based design studios we instill our graduates with the capacity to respond to the complexities of the world, to be both pragmatic and visionary, and to offer images and strategies to help shape our evolving built environments across a range of scales. With commitments to creating stimulating healthy environments, social and spatial justice, and environmental sustainability, we are equipping graduates to operate as change-agents through architecture. The following studios represent the diversity of design research within our Masters programme.
Course Director: Ross Brewin
Bachelor of Architectural Design
The Bachelor of Architectural Design provides a comprehensive and design orientated foundation, positioning architecture within the larger context of the contemporary challenges facing urban and regional environments across a changing planet. Our graduates develop future-facing skills through engaging with diverse perspectives and knowledge areas, enabling them to contribute to a sustainable and equitable society by putting architectural ideas to work in the world. The course embeds a focus on context - on the spoken and unspoken histories of place; on the social, economic and political systems that structure our built environment; and on the spatial practices, strategies and architectural solutions that frame our way forward. The program guides students to positions in industry, to further study and accreditation, as well as offering pathways into other spatial, social and urban disciplines.
Studios are the core of our architectural education and create a collaborative environment to explore design approaches through projects that respond to briefs, issues and different constraints. Studios model the way practitioners work with clients, teams, and stakeholders, engaging with a range of challenges across multiple scales from city to neighbourhood, from building to detail, imagining new environments of the future and shaping the way we live and interact with one another. The following studios represent a range of our approaches, addressing contemporary urban issues.
Course Director: Dr Tom Morgan
Master of Urban Planning and Design
The Master of Urban Planning and Design is an interdisciplinary and collaborative program that integrates design skills and thinking with planning knowledge in real-world settings. The degree is centred on four project-based studio themes: the Compact City, the Ecological City, Planning Metropolitan Growth Areas, and the Inclusive City. Through these studios, our students engage in cutting-edge urban planning and design work, integrating technical and creative skills that can be applied in traditional and emerging urban planning and design roles.
Course Director: Professor Carl Grodach
Bachelor of Interior Architecture (Honours)
Course Director: Dr Matthew Bird
Studio Leaders: Matthew Bird, Erin Ender, Stephen Hawken, Luca Luna, Hannes McNamara, Dasha Tolotchkov, Nadine Trister, Renee Weeden.
The Bachelor of Interior Architecture (with Honours) students employ creative design and construction technology to solve interior spatial challenges. The interior architecture degree provides students with the opportunity to experiment with creative ideas while gaining an advanced understanding of the principles of spatial design.
Honours year students have applied a broad range of skills developed in preceding studios and associated units through the investigation of an independent design research project. The project is developed to express individual concerns and a platform for future professional endeavours. Studio projects range from real client briefs involving cultural, commercial and community organisations to more speculative briefs that explore the opportunities and challenges of a continually transforming contemporary society.

The School Assembly Studio forms the foundation of a student-led Design/Make Initiative being undertaken in collaboration with Dandenong Primary School.
Master of Architecture
→ Spatial Disruptions
Studio leader: Jen Berean
This studio investigates the role of public art in reimagining what public space can be. Exploring a diverse range of approaches to public art, the studio shifts between scales, moving from exploring the role of public art strategies at a precinct scale, to developing detailed proposals for public art works.
Master of Architecture
→ The Urbanism of Walls
Studio leader: Laura Harper
Multi-residential construction continues to rely on labour intensive on-site processing despite advances in prefabrication. This studio investigates a different approach to the design of walls and residential construction.
Master of Architecture
→ Urban Sutures
Studio leader: Isabel Lasala
This studio offers students the opportunity to reflect upon the accelerated transformation of our cities and explore the possibilities for connection, reactivation, and consolidation of areas that are currently isolated.

→ Zero+
Studio leaders: Kieran Ward, Emma Lubbers
This studio is an exploration of how we can transition to decarbonised communities.
Bachelor of Architectural Design
→ Crossroads
Studio leader: Rutger Pasman
The suburbs of Metropolitan Melbourne are currently undergoing an incredible change. How will we adapt to a world with an atmospheric CO2 level of over 1000 ppm? What could be the spatial outcome of such a world and how do we as designers contribute, influence or manufacture it?
Bachelor of Architectural Design
→ Dark Mode
Studio leader: Alonso Gaxiola Gomez
Spencer 2 Spring (S2S) is interested in understanding Melbourne - particularly the Hoddle Grid - by cataloging the moments and events that make our city so unique. We see the city as our main source of knowledge and inspiration; Melbourne as precedent for intent.
Bachelor of Architectural Design
→ Empty
Studio leader: Georgia Nowak
This studio is focussed on the empty, disused, abandoned, borderless, contentious and hidden places of our cities. Amplifying this is the setting of a post-covid urban landscape.
Bachelor of Architectural Design
→ Flow State
Studio leader: Andrew Copolov
Flow State turns distribution into a civic process. Each student designed a distribution centre which features some form of public amenity. In doing so, they examined the ways in which architecture can reconfigure global distribution and logistics networks.
Bachelor of Architectural Design

Studio leader: Hannes McNamara
Bendigo has a shortage of housing and a desire for stronger communities. Students were encouraged to propose new cohousing and mixed-use residential models.
Bachelor of Architectural Design
→ Groundwork
Studio leader: Alysia Bennett
Macquarie Point in nipaluna/Hobart is one of the last large infill redevelopment sites adjacent to a working port in an Australian Capital City. After decades and numerous design ideas, construction is commencing onsite under the direction of a development plan that aims to create a new arts, culture, tourism and science precinct.
Bachelor of Architectural Design
→ If Not MITA?
