With a diverse culture already existing in Caulfield, ‘Creatives Constellation’ aims to expose that culture by providing both soft and hard infrastructure for creative communities and artist groups in a new Creative Precinct. Working as a broader curatorial strategy to re-imagine the public space around Derby Road, the project is activated within the precinct through three modes – the permanent, the temporary and the traversable – to cultivate a relationship between architecture and art. Working in synergy, the project extends beyond the campus and precinct boundaries, using the train line to distribute artists work to wider communities.

DERBY ROAD
The Caulfield Creative Precinct focuses on Derby Road as a primary place to host creative communities. With artist interventions and takeover of empty shops, as well as an accessible tram stop and widened footpaths the public street is reimagined to draw communities in and expose the existing culture in Caulfield.

CREATIVES CONSTELLATION
The project is activated within the precinct through three modes – the permanent, the temporary and the traversable – to cultivate a relationship between architecture and art. The precinct works to extend the ecosystem of the University, reaching beyond the campus boundaries through interventions using the train line, and creating connections with wider communities.

ARTIST-RUN-INITIATIVE [ADAPTIVE REUSE]
Taking over empty shops on Derby Road explores an adaptive reuse approach through the architecture of the project – protecting the heritage buildings and ultimately creating spaces that are more adaptable to change over time. 9 Derby Road sees an existing building adapted to host an Artist-Run-Initiative, with an open gallery and courtyard on the ground floor and smaller studio spaces above.

PRINT WORKSHOP
The print workshop is a large space that can host multiple activities. With a permanent set up – the ongoing production of publications and prints produces a physical distribution of an artist’s work. Utilising the train line could even see a monthly publication distributed down the rail, reaching places and communities as far as Gippsland.

BROADCASTING STUDIO
The broadcasting studio is a flexible and adaptive space, with an ongoing output that has a broad reach of audience. The studio not only provides space for students at the university, but other creatives working with music and sound.

ARTIST-RUN-INITIATIVE
The Artist-Run-Initiative provides space for artists, students, teachers, and local communities to enjoy through exhibitions, workshops and additionally as a local function space.
