Hello, the EMPTY studio focused on reactivating 'empty' spaces within the Melbourne CBD in its post pandemic future. My work is located within a commercial high-rise in the city's western quadrant. The project provides premium space within the Melbourne CBD to artists, enabling creative practice and workshops. This in turn will facilitate and support an artist-led program that offers help, promotes well-being, and creates a space for social connection to those experiencing mental illness. At the centre of this project is a need for human connection and the architectural outcomes that may facilitate this.

GATHERING - LUNCH ROOM

The kitchenette and communal tables offer a gathering space for artists practicing in the studio spaces. Shared bookcases facilitate collective resources for knowledge and learning. The space overlooks the central void, creating connection between the events below and the studio spaces.

ART STUDIOS + WORKSHOP

Artists’ studios offer autonomy within the space, with the option for both private and collaborative modes of practice. Areas facilitating casual practice are offered, with an emphasis on shared practice with the relationships of the users, either planned or chance encounters.

Individual studios and resources for artists, within an adaptable layout, offers a variety of studio conditions accommodating a range of artistic practices.

PLANS

2022 - LV 15

The initial iteration of the project resides solely on the fifteenth floor. Ten individual artists’ studios offer autonomy within the space, areas facilitating casual practice are also offered.

2030 - LV 15 + 16

The project grows to include the fourteenth and sixteenth floors. Individual studios and resources for artists, within an adaptable layout, offers a variety of studio conditions accommodating a range of artistic practices. The consultation and research spaces are more fixed in their layout, with privacy requirements (soundproofing, fixed openings) being taken into consideration.
