Hello! I’m Celeste Cao and I am a designer and artist who works across 2D motion, illustration, and visual brand identity. I enjoy observing and exploring potential visual elements in real-life scenarios and developing them into a drawing and design that captures attention and captivates the viewer.
My studio project is focused on exploring how tattoos in modern society are often fully displayed in public by the wearer, but they skirt the line between private and public because many people choose not to display them openly too.

Tattoos in Public

This banner depicts a range of tattoo styles, ranging from ancient to modern styles and techniques, and it is a summary of my research. The aim is to ensure my topic is public and bold and to captivate the viewer's interest, encouraging them to read the full story captured in my studio project book.

Tattoos in Public

The design on the cover of the book and its meaning is demonstrated by the “tattoo” font styling on the left with the text created from various tattoo pattern styles. This represents the discreet and personal choice of those who choose to keep their tattoos private. The lines in the center of the cover represent the schism between the private/hidden display of tattoos and the text on the right which is clear and open and represents the choice of openly displaying tattoos, making them viewable in public space.

Tattoos in Public

The book captures three different periods that took Tattoos from proud tribalism, to an association with criminality, to and anachronism and then finally blending into modern society.
The final chapter in the collection are tattoos from various members of the public. Each of their unique tattoos represents a different story and motivation for wearing a tattoo. These choices can be about a person they would want to memorialize or a design that would demonstrate their faith. From the research I conducted, I could see people’s perception towards tattoos has changed from generation to generation. Tattoos are more acceptable in public space than they ever have been.

Natural Forms

A propositional conceptual identity for an exhibition at The Gallery of Victoria. The event will be an art event with the theme of “natural forms” in June 2020. I designed a poster including all the information about the event and some facts about the topic. The main illustration visually communicates the concept of this event and explores the possibilities of natural form.

2D motion showreel

This showreel showcases some of my favourite designs from my 3 years of study in the 2D motion design workshop. My choice of a jazz funk beat for the background music allowed me to edit the design transitions to the rhythm of the music. The use of music and its rhythm creates an impactful emphasis for my motion works and reflects my personality.
