Chengzhi Yu is a recently graduated Monash University student, with a Bachelor Degree in Communication Design. In his Bachelor career, his speciality is User Experience Design and Service Design. During the final year of study, he participated in the Tsinghua University/Carnegie Mellon University co-curricular competition, where he was the team leader of a team of over 40 teams that were finalists and won third prize. In his graduate project, he has chosen to focus on a very serious and frequent problem in our society - Cyberbullying. The App "Umbrella" is built up for changing the user patterns in the context of Cyberbullying and to stop it from happening.

Project Umbrella

The app "Umbrella" monitors the presence of cyberbullying which happens in social media platforms, and guides young people in their behaviour on the internet by setting up a reward system. Use is mainly aimed at young people aged 15 to 18 years old. Secondary research has revealed that there are three common roles in cyberbullying cases: "Bullies", "Victims" and "Bystanders". The application is designed for the "Bystander" and "Victims" in the cyberbullying case. Users have to log in to the app and bond it to their usual social media apps in order to prevent cyber violence.

Wireframes & Workflow

The Low-fi to illustrate the functionality and flow chart of the app, which can be tied to the social media platform, it is really important to show how it really works in the social media platforms.

Research & Problem Pitch & Storyboard

By analysing the roles of the participants in cyberbullying to analyse the patterns, it was clear that the 'Victims' and 'Bystanders' in cyberbullying were the focus of the design. When designing the focus group, I decided that I wanted to encourage more 'Bystanders' to speak up for 'Victims' as a way of protecting them. I also designed the bullying block for 'Victims' themselves, giving users the ability to 'throw out' bad messages as spam at the first sign of them.

Interview

The Show and Tell process is quite important as a part of the primary research. I chose to do two interviews to try to figure out the roles of people who participate in Cyberbullying and their point of view about Cyberbullying.
