Hello! I’m Jess, a graphic designer based in Melbourne. I enjoy creating considered and intriguing designs with long-term impact, focusing on visual identities, branding, print-based design and publications.

My studio project, ‘Grain of Salt’, is a campaign which aims to raise awareness that not everything on social media is real, in order to reduce the overwhelming impact experienced by many social media users. The attributes of this campaign exist to imbed this idea into the minds of all, creating a more positive experience when it comes to social media and encouraging people to use it with a degree of scepticism, carrying a questioning attitude at all times.

‘Grain of Salt’ - Interactive Poster Campaign

The poster campaign is designed to raise awareness about the idea of taking everything with a Grain of Salt. It creates a familiar and bold presence which will become recognisable by all and link directly to the notion of taking what you see on social media with a sceptical attitude. In the bottom left hand corner of each poster is a QR code, inviting the audience to take part and submit their own Grain of Salt moment, boosting the impact of this campaign with user-generated content. Once responses are submitted, they appear in the bottom right corner where the public’s submissions are displayed on rotation.

‘Grain of Salt’ - Salt Journal

The Salt Journal is a mix between a diary and a journal. It allows people to plan their days and make notes in the morning, and reflect and be in touch with their thoughts in the evening. Each night users can reflect on two things they saw on social media that they took with a Grain of Salt, allowing them to be active social media users and in control of their emotions to reduce the overwhelming impact of social media.

‘Grain of Salt’ - Instagram Profile

The Grain of Salt Instagram profile is in some ways the backbone of the campaign. In this day and age, Instagram is the go-to place for a lot of things. This account acts as a safe place for individuals to come to and participate as much or as little as they please. They can share their Grain of Salt moment, look through other people’s Grain of Salt moments, shop the range of journals and merchandise and so much more. The bold yet calming Instagram account posts regular Grain of Salt moments and lots more to keep the audience engaged and on track with remaining active in their social media usage.

Design Research Kit - #socialmedia

Above is a Design Research Kit which I designed to explore the topic of social media. The outcomes of the activities within this kit ultimately provided evidence of the issues that the Grain of Salt campaign targets. Through creative research methods and the planning of considered and engaging activities for individuals to partake in, this kit gathered participant’s personal insight, experiences and feelings directly related to social media which formed the root of my campaign.

‘EVEN’ - Memory Card Game

‘EVEN’ is a memory card game aimed at children aged 5-9 but designed with all in mind. With the use of three colours, ‘EVEN’ illustrates equality despite one’s appearance, ability or thought-processes. The aim of the game, aside from collecting the most pairs, is to educate children (and adults!) about disabilities to create equality amongst all and break down barriers within the community that have existed in the past. Through this game, children will grow up with a better understanding of disabilities and the ability to put individual’s interests and personalities before their disabilities, changing perceptions and inspiring equality. Every human is different and this should be celebrated!

Melbourne Cinémathèque

The poster above is part of the proposed campaign identity I developed for the 2022 season of Melbourne Cinémathèque, an organisation which encourages experimentation away from the mainstream through an annual program of film screenings. This campaign is an innovative approach implemented across multiple formats, based on two key aspects of film; light and movement.
