Megan’s practice explores the relationship between design and the human senses and ultimately how these shape our everyday life. By incorporating a range of materials and mediums, her projects have dived deeply into the concept of sensory interactions and how they can provoke a range of emotions and alter atmospheres within a space. She understands the power we have as designers to make radical changes within society to reduce our environmental impact. With this understanding, Megan looks to incorporate sustainable, less normative approaches to bring spaces to life in a future-conscious way.

Pyrrophyta

“Pyrrophyta” is a collaborative project that consists of a floating disaster relief shelter located off the coast of Kangaroo Island, known to be a high-risk bush fire zone. “Pyrrophyta” explores the symbiotic relationship between algae and humans in the context of food production and use. Rather than a nutrition-based approach, the project focuses on the idea that algae and humans can provide food in the form of oxygen and carbon dioxide and hence can help enhance each other’s lives.

Algae cycles

Above are three diagrams that demonstrate the numerous functions of algae, which “Pyrrohpyta” utilises. These diagrams include the water purification cycle, photosynthesis cycle and biomass production cycle. These processes are needed to encourage a symbiotic relationship between algae and humans and make “Pyrrophyta” habitable.
