Howdy, I'm Ranbir 😁. I have a keen interest in identity, publication and UI/UX design projects. For me design is a practice about storytelling in an engaging manner.
Everyday Messaging invited us to explore the visual messages of everyday life. My focus was on the design of basketball courts in public spaces. The goal was to create a new variation of 'pick up basketball' by reimagining the half court as the canvas for communication. As lockdown restrictions eased, and people once again took to public spaces, this project reactivated a local Melbourne basketball court and observed the public's reactions to new rules and structures.

1 Through 5 - Court Application.

The new designed court for the pick up game is applied at a local park (Melbourne Museum Basketball Court). For this project the application was key as it was the only method to see if the design had been successful in its goal. It adds a new 4 and 5 point lines as well as a custom 3 point line which was missing on this court. The point system within the key is also changed based on research on NBA FG% over the last couple decades. The end product was delivered different to the proposed plan due to council requirements.

1 Through 5 - Participation

Part of the application was getting people to play the game. Here I had asked people at the courts to participate in the game after telling them about how the lines and numbers on the court work. It was awesome seeing how everyone interacted with the point system differently and trying out new plays.

1 Through 5 - Court Design Animation

This is a closer look at the court design and how the lines are split up. It also includes the numbers on the courts in a clearer view.

1 Through 5 - Posters + Stickers.

Alongside having the court design, these stickers and posters help in both marketing the game and being able to fact as an informative deliverable. The posters explain each set zone within the game while stickers at this by giving out facts about the zone and stats related to it in the professional leagues over time.

M1 'The Games We Play' - Cover

Milestone 1 for Everyday Messaging was a research-based exploration that lay the foundation for the major project in Milestone 2. As mentioned before I looked into court designs within local parks and researched what differentiated them and how this affected the players who interacted with the surface. Within this research I looked into not only local parks, but a general history of lines in the NBA and ambitious projects across Melbourne and Australia that pushed the norm of basketball court design.
