Hey, I’m Shilpa, an interaction designer with a passion for anything creative. I love problem solving and the art of story-telling, so I try my bit to incorporate these elements in my work. Along with design, I’m a huge music and photography enthusiast.

Over the span of two years at Monash, I worked on several interesting projects. I’ll be including some of my favorites here. Feel free to connect with me anytime :)

The first step : Bridging the communication gap between parents & kids

The goal of this project was to bridge the communication gap between parents and kids.

The first part aims at helping children open up about struggles that they experience at an early age by means of an interactive game. The game acts as a daily update diary for children which lets them express their moods and emotions. On completing certain game tasks, they can send a message to the moon.

The second part involves displaying those messages on a moon portal. The goal here is for the parents to read those messages and understand the mentality of kids. Once they empathize with their kids, they will take the initiative of creating a better environment for communicating with their kids.

Enhancing the travel experience for PTV passengers during the pandemic

With Covid-19 affecting health and economic sectors around the world, it was hard to manage the infection and minimize the virus spread. In Melbourne, public transport was one of the riskiest areas for the Covid-spread. This project’s goal was to improve and enhance the public travel of PTV Metro during the new normal. In this project, I contributed towards the case research, UI design, prototyping & testing, and video editing.

Our team proposed six ideas that will tackle a few risk factors that may occur during the pandemic. These solutions will not only be beneficial to facilitate passenger safety, but also enhance their travel experience while using the Metro.

Documentary - Sense of place

My elective in Monash was Digital audio/ video. I enrolled in this unit due to my sheer passion for films and video editing and learned a lot in the process. A fun project that I got to work on during that time was shooting and editing a documentary. The focus of this assignment was the composition, sound, and edit. The shooting itself took about 4 days as it was an outdoor setup. It was also challenging to get the sound right due to Melbourne’s windy conditions. But once I managed to get the right shots, it all came well together in the edit.

Masked - A critical design concept

Menstruation is a term that people can be shy or scared to talk about. In certain cultural contexts, girls going through their periods are deemed impure by society. Due to this, they are scared of buying sanitary pads in a public place. I wanted to generate a design outcome that would provoke people’s thoughts and make them question the ideologies attached to menstruation.
I named this design ‘Masked’ because it is a metaphor for how people treat periods as a secret that is uncomfortable to talk about.
Even a small response such as a mask design can give a voice to a lot of women to be brave enough to tackle the discomfort around periods and thus eventually break the taboo around it.
