Hello, my name is Stephanie Hrvatin. I am a recent communication design graduate with a passion for print, publication, typography and branding. As a designer I wish to create well considered creative solutions that are playful and appealing. My studio project “Safe Box” focuses on public space and how design solutions can create positive change within these spaces. This publication proposes a new design solution in hope to decrease the rates of harassment women and girls experience in public spaces.

Safe Box

The Safe Box is an informative publication that highlights the issues surrounding public harassment and proposes a design solution to fix this. The publication focuses on displaying the information in a practical and appealing way so that readers can fully understand the issue at hand.

Safe Box

Part one of this publication focuses on informing the reader about the problem. The initial spreads are the result of heavy research into harassment, abuse and violence against women in public spaces.

Safe Box

The publication includes both digital typesetting and handwritten components, in hope to create a more personal appeal. The perspective of multiple women was included to shed light on how many people this issue affects.

Safe Box

In order to portray the functionality and aesthetics of the box itself, I have included my initial sketches of the box as well as text explaining how it will look and work. Practicality was the main priority hence the aesthetics of the box are fairly simple. I wanted the publication to reflect this, so most of my design choices are simple and practical.

Safe Box

The purpose of this design solution is to aid women and girls in public spaces when they feel vulnerable and unsafe. The easiest way to deal with these feelings is to remove yourself from the source. The Safe Box can be used to seek refuge and isolation so that women have the opportunity to remove themselves from dangerous situations and spaces.
