Three years at Monash has led me to realise that Spatial Design is not only an act of creating an atmosphere or environment but importantly it is also a chance to tackle society’s critical issues. In the Future of Food studio, my research-driven design process focused on food scarcities or extinctions caused by population growth and climate change in the year 2045. The final speculative outcome is a food and technology museum that investigates solutions to the food issues faces by future human beings.

2045-FPMR: 3D Food Printing Museum & Restaurant in 2045

In 2045, people would lose knowledge of extinct food experiences or memories. The proposed design takes advantage of new technologies to simulate these lost experiences—such as 3D printing foods that replicate the form and taste of past food sources, and visual and olfactory illusions. Therefore, a 3D food printing museum & restaurant would be proposed in 2045 called 2045-FPMR in Niteroi Contemporary Art Museum in Brazil.

2045-FPMR

1. Transportation space: for 3D-printed food raw materials
2. Retractable stair: to the raw materials storage room
3. Storage room
4. Entrance/ exit of the exihibition space
5. Lounge
6. Bathroom
7. Cafe space
8. A.I. charging space
9. Information & reservation space
10. 3D food printing space
11. Preparation space
12. Lifter: to the dining space
13. Entrance/ exit of the dining space
14. Dining space

2045-FPMR: A.I. Charging Space

One of the features of 2045-FPMR would be integrating artificial intelligence so that all the work in the museum & restaurant would be run by the A.I. staff. A.I. Charging Space would be locate at the beginning of the exhibition visit.

2045-FPMR: 3D Food Printing Space

Because the 3D-printed food production processes would still be unusual to see daily, the space would have an educational component. The whole space would separate into six rooms for six types of food to print, such as meat, vegetable, seafood, fruit, cereal, and others like honey, etc.

2045-FPMR: Preparation Space

The preparation space would be located at the center of the exhibition floor, which is open and transparent. The center area of the preparation space would be an automatic lifter, that is used for food delivered and the used tableware recycled.

2045-FPMR: Dining Space

The restaurant of 2045-FPMR would have three themes: ocean, land and sky. Each theme would try to restore those previous scenes by the visual and olfactory devices, which aims to let people know the importance of protecting the environment. The projection and artificial food smell (visual and olfactory devices) would be adjusted to the specific theme per week to create an immersive food experience.
