Hello, My name is Tharushi Abeyaratne. As an emerging spatial designer, I am interested in using the element of surprise to disrupt overlooked everyday patterns in order to draw attention to them. My work includes the alteration of both everyday objects and spaces. I hope to encourage users to actively question pre-existing norms in society and how it affects its inhabitants. As designers, documentation plays an important role in how one’s design is communicated. For this reason, I enjoy using film as a form of documentation as it offers a more immersive experience to the viewers.
Harmony - Human-animal conflict
The project ‘Harmony’ is set in Wilpattu, Sri Lanka 25 years from now. Rapid urbanisation has put a strain on the tensions already existing between humans and other living beings. Harmony is a wildlife conservation learning institution that aims to achieve harmonious living conditions by resolving the ongoing human and animal conflict.
Harmony
The Learning Centre is designed in a way that confines humans while animals have the freedom to roam free around the area. The building was designed in sympathy to its surroundings, bending to avoid trees and conserving areas occupied by other living beings.
Harmony - Laboratory
The institution is made of three main areas, the laboratory, the Data Centre and the Accommodation Centre. The laboratory area winds around in a deformed loop and connects at the Data Centre. These two are the main learning areas and are designed to have a professional and clean feel to them.
Harmony - Technology in the Data Centre
The outcomes of hypothetical scenarios can be observed through spatial projections. This tool will be used to help showcase to the public the effects urbanisation has on the environment.
Harmony - Accommodation
As an aftereffect of the pandemic, the separation of places for rest and work became a major theme in architectural design. This can be seen in the drastic contrast between the design of the Accommodation Centre to the remainder of the institution.
