Simonds Laboratory

Integrated Physiology

Welcome to the Simonds Lab

We want to understand the biological mechanisms that underlie the development of chronic diseases including obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases including in environments including increased air pollution.

We're part of the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, and a member of the Metabolism, Diabetes & Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease Programs, and the Department of Physiology.

Our research

Our work seeks to understand how hormones, nutrients and neurotransmitters function together to regulate the cardiovascular and metabolic organ systems. Our studies have contributed to understanding how high blood pressure develops in obesity. Newer research is focussed on the damaging effects of air pollution on multiple organ systems.

Our lab has three main focus areas:

  • Obesity: causes and treatments
  • Obesity-associated diseases: diabetes and hypertension
  • Air pollution and how it causes diseases to develop
