UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
Monash University has been an Observer Organisation of the UNFCCC since 2016, and has sent annual delegations to the UN Climate Change Conferences (also referred to as Conferences of the Parties, or COPs). Monash’s involvement with the UNFCCC is coordinated by the Monash Sustainable Development Institute and Global Engagement.
COP is the main annual meeting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Each year, the 197 governments that are Parties to the UNFCCC gather to hold diplomatic discussions and negotiate on all aspects of the global climate response, with the current focus being the implementation of the Paris Agreement. These conferences also have a huge program of side events on every aspect of climate change and attract tens of thousands of experts and activists.
