Understanding Health Consumer Perspectives of AI in Digital Health in Australia

Through a mixed-data survey involving 275 Australian participants, this project identified key factors influencing trust, perceived usefulness, concerns and conditions for adoption of AI in healthcare in Australia. The findings include:
- Consumers are cautiously positive about the use of AI in digital health
- About half the respondents could not discern between human and AI generated summaries
- AI summaries were preferred for quality and empathy
- Trust is conditional - healthcare practitioner oversight is non-negotiable!
These findings highlighted the importance of clinician oversight, transparency, communication quality and governance mechanisms in promoting trustworthy AI systems.
The project has contributed to knowledge translation across academia and industry through journal publications, conference presentations and media engagement. The findings provide practical guidance for the design and deployment of patient-facing AI applications, particularly AI-assisted consultation summaries and communication tools.
