Understanding understanding. Why we can't rely on LLMs for safe AI
Recently released chatbots such as ChatGPT have shown remarkable achievements, resulting in their rapid application in numerous fields. However, there is a danger that experts and non-experts alike may attribute human-like abilities to them. This talk argues that the LLM approach will not achieve trustworthy AI because they lack an underlying model and cannot, therefore, be subjected to the rigours of professional SE. Some advice and pointers will be given on how to responsibly engage with the spread of LLMs.

Kevin T Ryan has taught and researched on Software Engineering and related topics for over 50 years and has worked in UK, Sweden, Zambia, USA and Canada as well as Ireland. He was one of the founders of the field of Requirements Engineering and his paper (with J Karlsson) on Prioritising Requirements has over 1000 citations. During his last 10 years at University of Limerick he led the team to establish Lero - the Irish Software Research Centre - which now involves all of the Irish Universities and many other institutions. More recently Kevin has written about SE Education and Responsible SE.
