Security Through Transparency - An Old Idea Recently Resurrected
Security Through Transparency - An Old Idea Recently Resurrected
Most systems today achieve security in two ways. The first is to prevent bad things from happening, e.g. blockchain systems make sure that no one can tamper with the data. This approach can be quite expensive, or require strong assumptions. The second is to ensure bad things are detected, after the fact. I will focus on the second approach, which becomes more and more popular since it allows for better performance, more flexibility, at the slight cost to security. Examples include certificate transparency, cloud-based ledger systems. I will discuss our recent work in this space, which focuses on building new applications based on transparency, and on improving the underlying system itself.
