Computing has become an integral part of nearly all social and economic aspects, underpinning every facet of life such as healthcare, energy, entertainment, communications, finance, and transport.
In parallel to advancements in conventional or classical computing, quantum computing has recently emerged as a new paradigm with the potential to offer immense computational capabilities, thereby solving problems which are intractable even on the most powerful classical computing platforms.
This presentation will provide an overview of the current state of the art in quantum computing and future directions for research. I will also cover our work on the development of practical applications for quantum computers. I hope to trigger exchange with members of broad information technology communities to generate new ideas and to identify specific problems and solutions for future quantum processors.

Professor Muhammad Usman
Professor Muhammad Usman is Head of Quantum Systems and Senior Principal Scientist at CSIRO. He has received his PhD from Purdue University in 2010. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Physics and a Member of the National Committee with the Australian Academy of Science. His research expertise and interests include Quantum Algorithms, Quantum Error Correction and Quantum Software Engineering.
Professor Usman is leading several national projects such as Olympics 2032, National Quantum Computing Testbed, and Robust Quantum Artificial Intelligence for Australian Defence through ASCA program. He serves on the editorial boards of several international journals including ACM Computing Surveys, Springer Nature Quantum Machine Intelligence and Nature Scientific Reports. Professor Usman is also an Associate Investigator with the ARC Center of Excellence for Quantum Biotechnology (QUBIC) and a Partner Investigator with the ARC Training Center for Future Leaders in Quantum Computing (FLiQC).
His work on Quantum Artificial Intelligence was the Winner of the State of Victoria iAward 2024, Innovative of the Year 2023 Award by Defence Industry, Winner of the Australian Army Quantum Technology Challenge in three consecutive years (2021, 2022 and 2023), Rising Stars in Computational Materials Science by Elsevier in 2020, and Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research (Early Career) at the University of Melbourne in 2019.
Professor Usman is also a recipient of prestigious international research fellowships from Fulbright USA and DAAD Germany.
