The project creates freely accessible, unfettered public space, symbolically recreating elements of the now largely compromised water canal network that previously infiltrated the urban fabric of the inner city, and creating a dialogue with the Lin Zexu monument and the Republican era YMCA square. The proposed diving platform is set at the city height limit of 24 metres, meaning when a person stands at the top they become the highest point of the city, as a momentary symbolic challenge of authority.

City Context

This project is located in Suzhou, China. It engages with local civic issues including the disparity between the enormous wealth of the city compared to the meagre wages of common workers, as well as the architectural remnants and layering of the changing focuses from the Qing dynasty, Republic of China and now, the People's Republic of China.
