Prejudice against things is subconscious, most of the time the biases exist outside of our consciousness. Implicit Bias, or implicit social cognition as called, unconscious associations and judgments, are influencing our social behaviours. The project aims to reflect on the topic and redesign the Terminal 2 building of Melbourne Airport as a new international terminal that integrates with the gallery and experience pavilion in response to the crisis of social identification.

The Arch

In response to the potential bias from the security guards, besides other implementations, the project features a walk-through security checkpoint tunnel equipped with in-built sensors, creating a gallery atmosphere for the passengers, and optimizing the experience while also reducing potential situations of social bias.

Collage

Through subjective observation and passive interaction, the impression and identification are always influenced by the perception of listen and see, and the subjective knowledge of the observed group, and that is where bias comes in. Besides direct observation and interaction, most of the labels that identify a group of people or types of identities, movies, music, news, and articles, also contribute to forming impressions, so too as diplomacy. Black people, white people, yellow people, transgender, homosexual, disabled.

A Comman Airport

The form of the design follows the idea of how perception shapes identity through listen and see, with the abstract shape of the eye and ear. The long wooden partitions represent the tinted glasses that filtered the information received based on subjective bias. Also represents the neural transmission through the deconstructivism structure.

First Floor Plan

The project provides informal spaces, such as library/foodcourt, and immigration/customs/security check, optimizing the travel experience throughout the space, deconstructing the interior with undefined free space and creating an ambiguous boundary.

Sections

The structure of the design will primarily be using pre-cast concrete as materials, combine with stack-stone and timber partitions. It also engages with large curtain walls and skylights, allowing as much natural light as possible into the space, also emphasizing spatial quality that complements light and shade.

Customs/Immigration/Security Check

Besides the walk-through security checkpoint tunnel, the space also contains immersive tunnel features with phrases in different languages on LED panels, as the project not only focuses on the implicit bias by the security agents, but also the passengers, especially international passengers which have diverse in culture, gender, race, residency, religion and beliefs.
