24 Canara Street, Doncaster East, is a purpose built robust DHV home built in 2007. The project looks at developing design strategies for this existing DHV dwelling across scales from the urban setting to construction details. The project focuses on reducing the number of residents per house and increasing the amenity for residents, visitors, and careers.

In particular, the project looks at the intimate nature of a dwelling and the importance of privacy/independence/ ownership in co living.

Doncaster East House

This project is the reconfiguration of a purpose-built robust Disability Homes Victoria dwelling in Doncaster East. The project looks at developing design strategies for this existing DHV dwelling across scales from the urban setting to construction details. The project focuses on reducing the number of residents per house and increasing the amenity for residents, visitors, and careers. Existing Conditions

This house is a purpose-built robust Disability Homes Victoria dwelling in Doncaster East. This single level red brick veneer home is typical of Early 2000’s suburban living.

Key issues:
•5 modest bedroom sizes which do not comply to SDA standards.
•Long dominate corridor
•Lack of functional/ usable spaces.
•Internal layout lacks zoning strategies resulting in disjointed spaces.
•Size and location of wet rooms. Bathrooms are clinical in size and layout.
•Underutilized outdoor space.
•Residents lack views from private areas including bathrooms and bedrooms.
•Lack of experiential quality to the house.
•Lack of privacy/ independence for residents.

Reconfigured

The reconfiguration of this house focuses on residents’ privacy, independence, and ownership in co living situations.

Reconfiguration strategies:
•Implementation of street seating for social front garden.
•New protected private entrance for all residents.
•Generous entrance to pause and prepare before arrival and departure.
•Maximization of existing openings.
•Creation of clustered private zone for each resident.
•Circulation zone that supports living space/storage/buffer.
•Use of corridor space as a buffer between shared and private zones.
•Connected and active north facing back garden.
•Internal gardens to create experiential quality within the house.
