Sarah Elms

As a spatial design graduate, I have realised the importance of researching and designing for space in an ethical, sustainable, and considered way. I am inspired to enhance and excite spaces that need fun and a bit of love. I am passionate about transforming space that responds to human interaction and can impact people in a positive and playful way. I completed my final semester through the Monash Study Abroad program as part of the Collaborative Design studio intensive in Prato, Italy. Below are three projects I completed throughout my degree, EcoGuardian being the one I completed abroad.

Khewra Baths (Outside)

Khewra Baths is a speculative project that aims to reveal the greenwashing tactics used by contemporary salt companies. This project is set in the year 2080, questioning moral and ethical issues of mining in Pakistan and questions the legitimacy of Himalayan salt from a marketing perspective. This is an embellished, over-exaggerated prediction of the future whereby purchasing simple rock salt products is no longer enough for consumers and the next best thing is to visit Khewra Baths which capitalises off fake claims of salt.

Blurb

Blurb is a modular design proposal that responds to the needs of the suburb Glen Huntly in Victoria, Australia. It is a movable set of chairs, tables, blackboards, and slides aimed at encouraging children to read, write and play. My project focussed on establishing a bond between enhancing the existing suburb and encouraging use of its empty spaces in the streets. A thorough examination of the site was undertaken noting the importance of weather, flora, fauna, texture, colour and the target audience and their typical activities.

EcoGuardian - Bee Backpack

Combining my love of illustration, design, and environmental sustainability, EcoGuardian is a speculative project that explores a future where natural habitats no longer exist because of urbanisation and the climate crisis. EcoGuardian is a backpacking company that serves as a last resort towards the survival of the planet and its ecosystem. Presented through a website and a set of illustrations, this work shows a potential, yet exaggerated future that is built on information from contemporary scientific sources to generate discussion around the importance of our ecosystem today.

EcoGuardian - Giraffe Backpack

The link between human, animal and space is prevalent in this work and inspired me as a spatial designer to pursue this concept. Access this website here: ecoguardian.cargo.site/index
