Diwen Gao

Hi, there! I am Diwen. I am a graphic designer. I have immense love for design, whether it be motion, typography, illustration, photography, or branding. I enjoy exploring and making fun, creative, and memorable designs. I am constantly looking for creative ideas to get the message across in the most effective way and seeking opportunities to improve my skills.

Be anything you wanna be

My campaign is about gender stereotypes. The target audiences of this campaign are children aged between 2-6. One of the outcomes is the jigsaw puzzle. I created a character, the orange dinosaur, who is a girl. By showing the different jobs of the dinosaur(astronaut, nurse, and firefighter), I hope to help children build awareness that there are no ‘boy’ or ‘girl’ jobs, and they could be anyone they want to be and do whatever they love to do. Children could learn this idea while they’re playing with the jigsaw puzzles.

Design research kit

My topic is gender stereotypes. The DRK consists of 3 parts. The first part asks the participants to answer some yes or no questions about how they think of gender stereotypes. The second activity asks them to circle the toys they would like to play with when they were young, and how their choices differ from their parents’. I also ask why they may have different choices of toys over time. The third part is about their gender identities. The participants will collect block stickers in different colors to compose their gender identities and explain them in a few sentences.

This is me

Another outcome is a picture book. In different gender stereotypes, the little dinosaurs will always tell children that there aren’t only ‘boy’ or ‘girl’ things, and everyone can be themselves. All are welcome, and it’s cool to respect everyone and what they love to do. Moreover, it will also encourage children to draw or write down what they like.

Activity cards

These activity cards encourage kids to colour the items using whatever colours they like.
