Ruby Graziano

Since starting this degree in 2020, my understanding of what it means to be a designer has continually evolved. From this project I learnt that it means analysing the way we live and its influence on our mental, physical and emotional health. My campaign project was made in response to the rising number of people experiencing burn out as a result of our demanding professional, social and personal lives. My campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of self-care through the phrase ‘Self-care prevents burnout.’

Poster Series: Self-care Prevents Burnout

My poster series connects to its audience through its nostalgic use of colour and style. It is meant to remind us of a time before pervasive technology and the expectations of a fast-paced world. My posters are designed to be placed in commercial areas where people are busily going about their day. They are bright, fun and inviting reminders to take time for ourselves whether that’s through a hot shower, a cup of tea or a swim, it is extremely important to look after our mental, physical and emotional health.

Primary Outcome: Self-Care Cube

My primary outcome is the self-care cube, placed in a highly trafficked area it’s meant to draw in commuters, workers, and people on a day off. By engaging with the installation, it forces them to consider what acts of self-care they have completed today and by reading other people’s responses, things they could do. The work itself is made up by the words and experiences of completely unconnected people, the space combines them into a universal experience of self-care. The bright pink and red transparent walls allow people to view participation within the installation and draw them in.

Primary Outcome: Inside the Cube

This is the first wall, which features the cup of tea motif. The space has only two vertical walls with the intention of feeling open and inviting. The bottom text reads ‘share a self-care activity you did today!’ prompting the audience to consider their daily routine and when they take time for themselves.

Primary Outcome: Inside the Cube II

The second wall of the Self-Care Cube uses the shower from the poster series, to show them as a reoccurring character within the campaign. The installation is interactive by allowing people to write with the paint markers, as prompted by the phrase on the walls.

Secondary Outcome: Mug

The final outcome of the campaign is a mug and a box of green tea. Having a hot drink is an easy and affordable way to relax and reflect. My campaign reminds people that self-care isn’t always bubble baths or expensive days out, it’s something we can incorporate into our daily routines.

Secondary Outcome: Box of Tea

My vision for this aspect of the campaign would be to have these handed out by the primary outcome as a physical reminder that we can all be working towards improving our mental health, and it can start with self-care.
