Yuen Xie

My name is Yuen Xie. As a spatial designer, my practices predominantly revolves around the use of 3D modelling software and works to investigate, explore and push the limits of conventional and traditional cubic architecture.

In 2055, the affluent life of some people has exacerbated the waste of food resources. However, most of these behaviours continue to be ignored, with improper disposal of garbage leading to pollution of our ecological environment. The emergence of the project BEHIND can turn the food waste in your daily life into a valuable resource. It converts your food waste into biogas to generate electricity.

BEHIND

BEHIND is a large light installation. The outer is composed of a total of 1000 LED lights, each of which represents a family unit. Every time a light tube is turned on, it represents the electrical energy converted from food waste that is enough for an Australian family. In the middle of the installation, behind the 1000 light tubes, are three food waste collectors, sorted by day, month, and season. Methane will be produced in these three collectors and transported through the pipeline above to the electricity generator for conversion, thus converting from biogas to electricity.

Conceptual Collage, BEHIND

Food shortages are a serious problem today, yet large amounts of food waste are still generated, and food waste landfills produce the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter, which then releases methane emissions that destroy greenhouse gases, causing climate change.

In some countries, people are often bear the brunt of the environmental impact of waste and continue receiving foreign waste from overseas and landfill in their homeland. So, they will continue to suffer from hunger and a harsh environment due to unnecessary food waste caused by some people. Also, environmental conditions have been paying the price for senseless waste, and this will exacerbate the tragedy of global warming.

Design Components, BEHIND

a. Foodwaste collection bin
b. Anaerobic reaction reactor
c. Methane collection pipe
d. Electricity generator
e. Electricity transportation pipe

Material Analysis, BEHIND

Material for the main components of BEHIND. The pipes that transmit methane and electricity will use stainless steel as their material. The food waste will be transported using PVC pipes and will be buried in the ground. The outer shell of the tube will be made of acrylic and will contain an LED spotlight inside. The main material of the three food collectors inside will be stainless steel, the electricity generators are also in stainless steel.

Loop

Loop is an interactive park in the worker's garden in the Living Museum of the West. The current workers, retired workers, visitors and their families are welcome.

The main component of the design is wave shaped strips accompanied by the ring-shaped clasp, to show the idea of their emotional change during the day and also looping the history of the past and the activities of the present.

Design Components, Loop

A large cylindrical projector room, stepped bleachers, small cylindrical sculptures, many strips of sculptures with different directions, and floor-mounted screens.
