Allison Ching Hang Ng

By recreating scenes that I am familiar with, my art enables me to declutter my thoughts and help me to communicate with others. My practice tends to capture some personal moments and my surroundings in a dramatic way. With the series ‘In times of uncertainty’, I have explored the challenges of mental illness, as well as focusing on the hope that underpins the recovery process. While this work explores the explicitly personal, I want to take this chance to share my experience and perspective with others in the hope of it resonating with people that have had similar experiences, so they could get some inspiration, to feel, to reconnect with oneself, and to heal.

There is no place like my room

This painting is from the series ‘In times of uncertainty’. It has captured my nighttime routine in my bedroom. There was this time period where I locked myself in my house because I thought my room was the only safe place in this world. Laying on the bed and wrapping myself in the blanket would make me feel secure and peaceful.

Lost in reflection

Another painting from the series ‘In times of uncertainty’. It is based on a mirror selfie that I took in my bathroom. This reflects moments when I’ve looked at myself in the mirror and thought about my existence and life.

Umbra

The last painting from the series ‘In times of uncertainty’. It captures the moment I left my room. With the gloomy dark room in the background, the soft luminous light from the door has implied my healing process and the willingness to connect with others again.
