Richard Hugo Davis

My artistic practice is a reflection of my life; this is taking the form of abstract painting. Painterly abstraction is the ideal style for conveying my ideas, as it is a non-narrative, pure form of expression that allows me to explore and be inspired by my environment and current emotional state. I’m interested and curious about the more expressive nature and value of colour, focusing on patterns as a means of communicating this. The nature of abstract art encourages individual interpretations from the viewer, to enable this free association, I choose to title all my works Untitled. I’m interested in the way that each person's experience and perception of form and colour are individual.

Untitled

Oil on canvas, 1016cm x 1016cm. This piece investigates colour theory with an emphasis on patterns to reflect my past struggles with dyslexia. This painting has been directly inspired by the bookshelves and book spines from my family's bookshelf. The bookshelf that dominated the living room of the house where I grew up felt like a rebuke as I became more conscious of my condition. I've always considered reading and enjoying books to be an abstract idea. My colour choices have been guided by these references. Due to the general nature of oil paint, the blurred edges of each line resemble my own distorted vision when reading. However, I wish to encourage individual interpretation.
