MAAd Infills

As the demographic dynamics of Melbourne undergo a transformative shift, MAA'd Infills examines the discourse surrounding housing development and inner-city site utilisation. Rather than conforming to established norms, the studio challenges and questions prevailing strategies, presenting itself as a creative force eager to disrupt the status quo. The studio explores how the public interface can be effectively used as a tool for connecting public and private spaces within the urban environment.

While infill development is not a new concept, the studio uses this lens through which the students investigate its potential. The emphasis is not on activism but on a thoughtful exploration of the challenges and possibilities associated with infill development. The studio acknowledges the existing flaws in current practices and seeks to understand how these can be addressed in the context of Melbourne's changing landscape.

The exploration of thresholds in the urban setting is approached with a deliberate consideration of topography, climate, streets, and community engagement. Sustainability, community involvement, and an understanding of local context become integral aspects of the analysis, contributing to a well-rounded comprehension of the urban fabric.

Through the study of design precedents, students in the studio develop arguments structured around housing and the public realm. The focus is on practical and considered approaches, moving away from activism towards a more analytical and problem-solving orientation. By integrating real-world challenges into the academic setting, students consider the broader impact of their designs on communities, emphasising the role of architectural thresholds in promoting connectivity and inclusivity. Emphasising and engage with the complexities of the user.
