Prato has a historic and enduring association with regenerative water use. It has documented ties to the processing, repurposing, and recycling of wastewater dating back to the inception of the textiles trade. The following project is a multi-faceted water recycling facility that aims to continue the region's sustainable use of treated water by modernizing and diversifying its deployment. Promoting widespread community engagement and activation by increasing public amenities and, in the process, establishing an independent circular economy. Ultimately, creating a functional hub beyond the old town where sustainable practices can be celebrated and shared with the local community.

Development

Prato, much like its regional counterparts, finds itself in a unique position, existing between different times. This space has historical ties to industry, while also gaining recognition for its contemporary innovations. This graphic explores the contrast between the old and the new, while also delving into the potential for regenerative development in this area.

Entrance

Visitors will be guided into the proposed site through the surrounding fields of vegetation and through a curated series of thresholds. These thresholds will promote engagement with the site's critical features before directing visitors further into the space.

Workspace

Within the scope of this project the function of water recycling for regenerative means was of premium importance and therefore it became critical to highlight spaces which facilitate set functions. The following explores the proposed dynamics within the in-take room where the initial processes of the water separation takes place. Whilst also highlight the existing community engagement and transparency with the site beyond the space in question.

Planning scheme

The following shows the proposed planning scheme for the water recycling facility located in its entirety within its context. It highlights different segments of the design, such as the primary treatment facilities, water clarifiers, aeration pools, athletic facilities, and the ever-expanding wetlands, along with accompanying vegetation plantations.

Longitudinal section

When proposing a design of this scale, it is crucial not only to contextualize the design but also to illustrate the context in which the design exists. This graphic also enables the appropriate representation of the different features proposed on-site. This section explores the southern grandstand, the adjacent football facilities, the elevated concourse, aeration pools, and the gradually developing vegetation surrounding the hub.
