The following project is a transition center for female prisoners nearing the end of their sentence who have experienced intimate partner violence and feel prison is a safer environment for them.
This design outcome is the result of extensive research to better understand the user and how best to accommodate for complex needs in the transition stage from a carceral institution and preparing to return back into the community.
Elevation perspective from Victoria Parade
The facade of the center features adjustable louvres and cube screening to increase a sense of privacy for the occupants. With a transparent yet solid boundary, occupants can see onto the street with sightlines along Victoria Parade, important for creating a feeling of safety.
Private outdoor courtyard
The small outdoor courtyard is an area ideal for meetings with therapists, support staff from external organisations, visits from family and a space to retreat located away from the communal areas of the site. It is a flexible space that feels cosy, connected and safe.

Section A - Longitudinal section
Situated between Victoria Parade and a four storey residential at the rear of the site, the two buildings on either end of the perimeter frame the central courtyard area. The rectilinear layout allows for easy wayfinding around the site whilst the use of levels creates various points of view from one end of the site to the other end.
Section B - Longitudinal section
Becoming accustomed to a healthier environment can influence the type of environment desired once the inmate is released, seeking that same healthy environment they were accustomed to. Elements such as raised ceilings for increased ventilation and lighting, personalised sleeping spaces, soft textures and defined communal and private spaces create a conditions for the user to interact with at their own discretion. However, replicating some of the conditions can create a sense of familiarity for the occupant while they adjust. The sounds coming from Victoria Parade mimic's the continuation of noise often experienced in a prison setting.
