Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2023

This semester Leia investigated the sensitivity of the Galgi Ngarrk Grasslands, located in Craigieburn, Victoria. In doing so, her project evolved into relocating two businesses; a musical charity and a swim school, into a vacant building in Brunswick. Leia's project explored elements of the built form including sustainability and reuse whilst incorporating elements of the natural world including water management, revegetation and weather protection.

The Monash Architecture Award

The Monash Architecture Award for a project that exemplifies the design ethos, principles, and methodologies of our department.

Best in Studio: 'Minus'

Most outstanding design project in the studio 'Minus,' in the Master of Architecture.

A view of the performance space

The performance space houses the musical charities events, minimising the economical implications and transportation of equipment to hired venues. The performance building is constructed from reused bricks from the site, and includes an office space, change rooms, a concession stand, equipment storage, public toilets, and a 100 seat indoor theatre that opens out onto the landscape which allows for indoor and outdoor performances.

A view of the landscape

This project opens the space up to nature, whilst retaining the steel roof truss system as a form of structural expression and uses the frame as an operable weather protection system, reducing the need for mechanical conditioning within the space. The minimisation of the interior building mass and the separation of the space into three individual buildings further reduces the spaces energy consumption. The buildings surround the natural pool surrounded by grassland planting, creating a considered landscape for swimming lessons, gathering and contemplation.

A view of the music room

The music room run by the musical charity provides an opportunity for children to explore music in a calm and quiet environment, surrounded by nature. After-hours, the room becomes a practice space for the musical charities bands, and also offers a recording booth for budding musicians or radio appearances.
