Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2023

I am Naish Dare, an industrial design and mechanical engineering student. Prior to my second semester of 2023, I'd never had the chance to explore my interest in communication design. Studying in Italy as part of Monash’s Prato Design Program finally allowed me the chance to do so.

I am terrified of forgetting important things that I experience; places, spaces, conversations, feelings, people, food, film, music, books and other works of art. While on the Prato study program, I asked; how can I preserve the memory of my time in Italy? I wanted to use my association between memory and colours as a tool for such conservation.

Colour My Mind

Colour My Mind is a 148 page publication that documents my experiences in Italy between the months of August and October in 2023. The book pairs each identified experience with associated colours to strengthen my recollection.

Layout

Photography, graphic design, creative writing and sensory based poetry are used to complement the stories shared in the publication.

Expressive Experimentation

Secondary spreads are dispersed throughout the publication, which break the regular format to experiment with geometry and type, to further enhance the sensory representation of certain memories.

Index

An index is also featured at the end of the book, which features every colour used in the book, split into colour groups.

Binding

The book is coptic bound with an exposed spine, so as to display as much colour to the exterior of the book as possible.

Colour My Mind

The final product serves as a collection of 71 colours that represent my time in Italy. Each unique colour bears the ability to evoke emotion and nostalgia upon reflection.
