Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2023

Hello, I’m Alyssa.
I am a graphic designer based in Naarm/Melbourne. Throughout 2023, I was the art director for Esperanto, Monash University’s student-led print magazine. I love creating typographic identity systems and working with both digital and print outcomes.

Do You Really Need That? Is a social campaign that encourages consumers to reflect on their consumption habits and the effects they have on themselves and those around them. This campaign drew inspiration from receipts and information gathered from field research and surveys.

Do You Really Need That?

The major part of My project ‘Do You Really Need That?” is a poster series that discusses Australia’s problem with consumerism. The series is an extension of the receipt aesthetic which was first demonstrated in my DRK. These 7 posters were actualized at two sizes — A0 and 72mm x 160mm — The smaller-sized posters were thermally printed on a receipt printer.

Design Research Kit (DRK)

To begin the design process, I sent out Design research kits (DRK) made to look like receipts. Participants filled in these surveys and sent them back to me. The questions enclosed related to spending habits and the participant’s feelings towards these habits. At the start of the semester, I began collecting the receipts I used to ignore and studied their aesthetic and the way they make us feel.

WTF IS BNPL?

as a direct result of one of the answers to a question on my DRK, and self-directed research on Australia’s shopping habits, the zine — WTF IS BNPL? was born. WTF IS BNPL is a pocket guide to understand how a Buy Now Pay Later service works and what it does. The series uses colour and easy-to-follow, approachable instruction and layout to mimic how BNPL services entice users.
