Hi, my name is Josie Green and I’m a communication designer based in Melbourne, Australia. I enjoy creating polished and engaging designs that draw the attention of my target audiences, with a keen interest in print design, brand identity and event promotion.

Excellence in Theory

Kalbar Sunflower Festival

The brief for this project allowed me to explore different image-making techniques such as painting.
I started with watercolour painting sunflower petals in both yellow and orange. With the body of the petals working, I used a sponge brush to create the inside ‘seed’ part of the flower to give the painting texture.

Putting the flowers into Photoshop, I was able to work on the composition of the flower bunch to best suit the poster size. I changed the orientation and brightness/contrast of the flowers to create a greater depth of field giving the image a dynamic and organic look. I paired the image with a simple sans-serif font which complements to image composition.

Melbourne Cinémathèque

My proposed identity for the Melbourne Cinémathèque draws inspiration from the experience of watching a movie. The identity is reliant on the use of imagery and the compositions created by the imagery paired with the lime green-coloured font chosen.

The composition of the photoshopped eyes works well with the bold typeface to create a clean poster design that sets the tone for my proposed identity system.

Melbourne Cinémathèque

The calendar design mirrors the poster design, incorporating mouth reactions to films scattered around the design along with the coloured abstract shapes.

Overall, my proposed identity resonates with film audiences with their reactions to watching films at the cinema being reflected. The identity system uses a simple colour scheme to communicate its ideas and could be modified to work across multiple different formats.

All Hands Bury the Dead

To create my final designs, I began by researching the meaning behind the song I had chosen. “All Hands Bury The Dead” by Wilson Tanner, revolves around a burial at sea which is what prompted my concept brainstorming.

Having decided on the wreath shape, I wanted to create a texture for the type to help it appear as though it was floating on water. I turned to digital techniques to help my design and used brushes on the app Procreate to help create the texture I was aiming for.

Overall, I’ve created a moody and dynamic design that visually represents to idea that begins the original song.

Mind Unwind

I chose to explore the topic of bedtime stress for my activation campaign. Lying down and your brain running through all your tasks for tomorrow, upcoming assignments and social commitments.

From my results, I found that 66% of participants aimed to get more sleep than achieved and that colouring and meditation helped relieve stress. This led to the creation of my mural design. Accompanied by posters that inform the purpose of the mural and the need for good sleep, I hope for audiences to think about their sleep habits.

Overall, I believe I’ve achieved a successful campaign brand that is eye-catching to my target audience brings awareness to sleep health and reduces student anxiety.

Bush Heritage Australia

My re-design of the brand identity for Bush Heritage Australia relies on the cohesive use of shape and colour to create clean and simple applications that appeal to audiences and encourage them to learn more about the brand. Due to the shape I used to create the logo, it made the identity easy to flow from one application to the next.

Overall, my re-design is versatile and clean appealing to the younger adult audience I was targeting with the fix-up of the social media design. The cohesive nature of the brand should be recognised across its applications making it a successful project outcome.
