Hi, I am Yu Fei! I am a communication designer passionate about identity, motion, print, and the application of illustrations within design projects. I strive to explore and convey deeper meanings and information in each project through meaningful visual language. My study and living experience in Melbourne and my Chinese background give me a unique perspective that allows me to understand transnational social issues within design practice. In my view, communication design is not only about giving information but also about establishing emotional connections.

Surrogate Mother Calendar

The surrogacy calendar I've designed uses illustrations to show surrogate mothers' experiences or feelings at the top. The dates, months, and events are at the bottom. I intend to use it to depict and summarize the year-long journey and emotions of a surrogate mother. It encompasses the nine and a half months of pregnancy, as well as the period before pregnancy, including contract signing and embryo transfer, the post-birth for recovery and the eventual separation from the child over two and a half months, piecing together an entire year's calendar narrative.

Behind Surrogacy (Brochure)

From research, I discovered that many people have a limited understanding of surrogacy and are unaware of the issues surrounding it. Therefore, the brochure is narrated from the surrogate mother's perspective to show the realities behind surrogacy.

Social Media

The Instagram post style uniformly uses blue and light pink as background colours at intervals. Highlight the surrogate mother's experience and challenges with illustrations that will entice the audience to view. Provide a space where the community that wants to learn about surrogacy can connect.

Design Research Kits

My design research kits investigated participants' awareness of surrogacy, their attitudes and those of people around them towards surrogacy, whether supportive or opposed. It also surveyed which circumstances of surrogacy they support. Participants were asked to prioritize which rights are more important for surrogate mothers and the children born through surrogacy. The main aim of this activity is to explore the level of understanding of surrogacy among people and to survey the public's attitude towards surrogacy.

Infographic poster

The infographic poster illustrates the differences between commercial and non-commercial surrogacy. It also highlights that one of the challenges in regulating commercial surrogacy is the inconsistency in surrogacy laws across different countries, which often leads to cases of ‘cross-border’ surrogacy. Some of the data presented in the poster were collected from participants who filled out the design research kits.
