Hi, I’m Edie! I’m a Communication Designer/Media Communications student who is passionate about publication and experimenting within my design. My Activation project ‘EverythingNothing’ centres around an exhibition that removes the curatorial frameworks of Instagram. Attendants are asked to upload images that capture the in-between or mundane moments of life which then becomes the ‘art’ of the exhibition. My project for Vision 2024, ‘Feast’, is a retrospective of Australian multi-disciplinary artist Darren Sylvester. The outcomes of the project employ irony and outrageousness to mirror Sylvester’s subject matter - which centres on concepts such as pop culture, consumerism, authenticity etc.
EverythingNothing' Post Exhibition Publication
A 36-page publication documenting the “exhibition” EverythingNothing. It includes images that were uploaded on the night, along with the Instagram handles and proposed “captions.” It also includes “images” of the gallery space/projections, as well as notes from the exhibition organisers. My outcomes for this project aimed to challenge the rules and aesthetics of design, much like the exhibition challenges how we use Instagram. My Post Exhibition Publication does this through its format (being bound by metal rings and featuring a flip book style image layout as well as many different page sizes and inserts), as well as type manipulation and hierarchy, colour etc.
EverythingNothing' Poster Series
A secondary outcome of my 'EverythingNothing' exhibition was a Poster series, in which I created 3 posters and 3 paste-ups to promote and publicise information regarding the exhibition. Continuing to challenge design norms, these designs feature out of the box interpretations of type and layering - which is balanced with simple typesetting for both contrast and overall legibility. The works also include my own imagery.
EverythingNothing' Ticket/Infographic
A multi-functional infographic, that when folded flat, folds down into a ticket for admission to the exhibition - includes location, date, time, and a short introduction to the meaning behind the exhibition, as well as a call to action/steps/guidelines for submissions, and a QR code on the back, that links to a Google Form for the attendant's submissions.
Feast' Exhibition Catalogue
For my exhibition titled 'Feast,' I created a catalogue to display the works of Darren Sylvester, that attendants could anticipate seeing in the exhibition. Due to the themes portrayed in Sylvester's work - such as pop culture, consumerism, authenticity mortality etc - I decided to make this catalogue look like a magazine, as I felt that magazines, pop culture and consumerism especially were all inextricably linked. The catalogue is A4 in size and printed on HD silk paper to replicate a silky magazine finish. Bright colours and expressive layouts are used throughout to link to the concept of 'more is more' that I applied consistently throughout this exhibition's identity.
Feast' Exhibition Invitation
Based on Sylvester's subject matter (which often covers concepts such as pop culture, consumerism, authenticity and mortality) I decided to play on the idea of consumption, in both its metaphorical and literal sense. Whilst Sylvester's work talks about consumerism, the subject matter of 'Feast's' promotion centres around the consumption of food and an actual feast. Therefore, I decided to create an Exhibition Invitation in the form of a burger box and a meal ticket, with a hand written invitation, inviting them to the opening night/feast at the State Library of Victoria
Activation Design Research Kit
Design Research Kit (DRK) was a research method employed at the beginning of my Activation project to gather information surrounding my topic, which was at this stage, people’s perception of themselves and their usages with Instagram. Following the results of this Kit, I then shifted the perspective of my campaign to focus on the curation embedded in Instagram as a platform.
