Hey, I’m Siena! I am a graphic designer interested in branding, publishing and mixed-media design. I love colour, texture and working manually to create unique design solutions.
‘third space fair’ is a community pop up event all around Melbourne, encouraging locals to interact and discover what is going on in their neighbourhood. The monthly event promotes the various clubs and activities within a suburb, with wider goals to facilitate community, as well as increasing the mental and physical health of adults.
The name comes from a sociology theory where the 'third space' is a place outside of home, work and school where people can connect, relax and share ideas.
third space fair - Poster Series
To promote upcoming ‘third space fairs’ I created a series of 7 A3 posters that can be tiled or arranged in different formats depending on the space available. They use contrasting colours to grab attention and would be plastered around a suburb in popular community spaces.
third space fair – Zine Guide
On the day of a fair this A6 zine would be handed out at the entrance to guide and inform people about the event. These zines are printed on 100gsm A4 standard paper making them a cheap solution for a low budget community event.

The zine can fit easily into pockets and bags for easy access during the event. Additionally, the guidebook folds out into an A4 map with information on the facilities, parking and food areas.
third space fair – Wayfinding
As the events are held in parks, streets and public areas, signage needed to be easily portable or temporary. Using a stencil and chalk spray paint the logo icon is used to create wayfinding that is organic for the user to follow. This could be seen around the perimeter of the event, or guiding towards high priority facilities like toilets.

The posters were printed at A3 size so they could be pasted onto walls as well as stuck on message boards and operate as loose flyers. The poster design is slightly ambiguous to generate intrigue around the event, prompting people to follow the Instagram or website link. Readability of the text is increased by using the line motif to underline significant information, alongside offset text that creates hierarchy reading left to right.
third space fair – Wayfinding
A simple acrylic A-frame would sit at the event entrances and point the way to toilets and seating areas. I opted for orange and blue backgrounds instead of white to make the sign as visible as possible. These colours will stand out in event locations where the predominant background colours are browns, greens and greys, making the signs an unmissable wayfinding cue.
