Tianjie Yang is a Chinese artist based in Melbourne. She focused on making art involving video, experiment, and photography, investigating the relationship between human and technology. Reflecting on how do humans over-rely on technology and are human too confident in ability to control it and using her experiments as the source, her current practice examines an unconscious object, ferrofluid cannot act subjectively, but they can accurately reflect objective things.

Autonomy

I explore the autonomy of objects in my project. I record ferrofluid(fluid magnet) changing shape with different sound waves. I use a cyberpunk aesthetic to create a sense of civilization decaying, to remind people to be critical of technology at all times. The magnetic fluid responds to acoustic waves to create different shapes, just as humans are constantly effected and impacted by the world, especially digital technology. Retro TV and technology-oriented videos form a strong contrast, satirizing the negative effects of human over-reliance on technology. The audience can experience the fun of fluid magnetism for themselves, generating more understanding in the interaction.
