Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2024

Hudayfa Osman is a student of Architecture with a multidisciplinary approach throughout his studios. Informed by a background interest in urban studies, fine art and design theory, Osman weaves narratives of architecture and its interactions with the city throughout his work.

This studio, his response focused on the creation of a museum that uncovered the urban ecology of our cities and the multiplicity of architectural artefacts found nearby. Through resurfacing hidden elements of our cities such as sewage drains and building supports, Osman's work intends to bridge the seen and unseen frameworks of our city.

Scaled Physical Massing Model

Clear acrylic processed with frosting spray, Plywood, 3D printed filament. 1:100.

Sitting on a lightbox, this massing model intended to direct focus towards the scale and form of the building in comparison to the surrounding site- indicated by the translucent acrylic. The model is diagrammatic in nature, simplifying the form of the building and its surroundings. In addition to this, we can see emphasis of the construction of the model through the finger joints and glueless connections that create a seamless finish.

Composite Perspective Section with Isometric Detail callouts

This drawing expresses the spatial atmosphere of the museum, and draws attention to material and construction connections in the building. The individual connections from the sandwich wall assembly, to the grout and weatherproof membranes, are extruded towards the viewer. The callouts along the right provide further insight into the specific areas such as the water box gutter in Detail 01, to the planter box in Detail 02, and the floor-ceiling connection in Detail 03.

This was a bridge between the atmospheric and technical drawings I created this semester.

Site Palimpsest

Collage and drawing has been a key part of my practice throughout my degree, however in this drawing I have focused on the multiplicity of the site conditions. Layering hand drawings of various scales, mediums and projections was an approach I used to compare aspects such as the underground drain network with the surrounding major streets. In addition to this, the scale examines the micro- such as the texture of the building, and the macro- such as the view of the building, alongside each other.

This is a reflection of my thesis for this project, the city is a palimpsest of overlain visible and invisible narratives that form a cohesive message.

Shadow Plan - Level 2

Shadow Plan - Level 2, seeks to express the atmospheric quality of the museum through rendering the shadows, textures and light penetrations of the building. Shadows and atmospheric quality was a key part of my project this semester, and my aim was to display how it would feel to be within this building. This is an attempt to alleviate the aspects of a building that traditional orthographic drawings cannot express, such as the 'feel' of a space, without relying on 3D renders.

Portfolio Extract - 'Five Over 1' Rendered View

This extract from my portfolio displays a rendered view of a project created in another studio, 'MAA-D About Town', where we were tasked with creating a mixed use apartment complex on the Fitzroy Gasworks site. Responding to the site needs such as transport links, nearby amenities such as Wurun Secondary, and the existing urban appearance, 'Five Over 1' is a response to an increasingly densifying inner city.

The project focused on co-living, building circulation hierarchy, and walking desire paths.

Portfolio Extract - Parklife Site Map

This site plan created for the studio Working Towards Leisure led by Bella Singal formed the baseline for my project Parklife; an urban intervention tram stop in Fitzroy. Assessing the parks in the local area, my urban intervention attempted to bring what we love about local parks such as rest, community connection and shade, to urban environments.

Using QGIS, I was able to create a map that assessed the existing tram and train connections, as well as the parkland immediately nearby as well.
