Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2024

This is Jiabao Shao, and I am currently pursuing a Master of Architecture at Monash University, with an expected graduation in December 2024.
The theme of my final studio is "Fissure., which can be identified as Colonialism's destruction and displacement pose an ongoing threat to Indigenous knowledge and traditions.
The main project aims to connect the Glen Waverley Civic Precinct and Library project and renovate the current library. By adding other civic events and showcasing its prominent location, the library offers a wealth of opportunities to improve and enrich the civic precinct site and contribute significantly to the greater activity centre's urban and cultural landscape.

Aerial View

The design features a large cladding wall, which maximises the natural light access while reading. This innovative combination adapts to the surrounding environment, providing a biodiverse and adaptable multi-purpose façade.

Render 2

The organic shape of glazing demonstrates in an intriguing form how Indigenous culture is fractured in Australia as a "Fissure", it symbolises the ongoing threat to Indigenous knowledge and traditions posed by the destruction and displacement of colonialism.

Outdoor Park

The building is surrounded by natural landscapes and uses the open views to create sloping gardens with outdoor restaurants, cafes and gardens for residents to take delight in.

The Cube Façade

The Cube Façade evokes the idea of a symbiosis of flora and fauna on this land, where birds, insects, small animals, and various plants coexist and thrive on the skin of the building.

Interior - Library

The interior open step design illustrates the use of reading and activity areas. Readers can share the open skylight for conversation, reading, or reflection.
