Masters of Urban Planning and Design student planning for the regenerative reuse of former quarry sites.

Botanic Ridge Sandbox

This project focuses on developing a plan for an alternative urban future for the reuse of a quarry site located adjacent to the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens on the lands of the Bunurong Peoples. The regenerative reuse for the quarry provides an opportunity to meaningfully strengthen the socio-ecological systems of the surrounding land uses and habitat of the quarry site.

Guiding Principles For Quarry Reuse

The long temporality of the regeneration of brown-field sites, such as quarries, means that there is an opportunity to learn through the process of doing. The guiding principles of “Caring with Environment”, “From Extraction to Experimentation” and “Circular Reuse”, moves away from the hierarchy of human-centred design (caring for) and repositions this binary to understand the role that a healthy environment plays for the collective health of society.
