Quarry Futures explores how quarries and the material extracted from them influence the organisation and material character of the urban environment. This studio is a collaboration between students of Architecture and Urban Design/Planning, and students explore case studies of quarry transformations over time to inform a precinct scale urban design proposal for a quarry of Melbourne’s fringe, focusing on ecological repair, energy production and community re-use over time. Architecture students then developed a series of building components and construction systems with a critical approach to quarried materials such as stone, clay, sand and cement culminating in a series of prototypes developed in the MADA workshops.
