Hi, I’m Sarah, a Melbourne-based graphic design and media communications student with a passion for bold, vibrant and detail-oriented design. I strive to build impactful identities, often blending my skills in photography, typography and copywriting to bring a unique and lasting impression to each project. My recent projects 'Ghost God Man', 'Rewear Relove' and my 'Sexual Health Explainer Video' highlight not only my love for the colour red but also my growth as a designer. The branding, motion, and composition skills I’ve developed have significantly enhanced the progression and execution of each project.
Ghost God Man Development
The brief for this project was to design a State Library exhibition about a well-known creative. I chose Nick Cave. The initial stages were about researching our chosen figure and constructing a typographic poster informed by our discoveries. My poster design strongly informed the rest of my project including the name of the exhibition and alignment of text. I had decided at this point that I wanted the exhibition design to be bold and textured, alluding to Nick Cave’s rawness and intensity as a musician who has suffered through immense grief and addiction.
Ghost God Man Teaser Film
Inspired by Nick Cave’s song 'Red Right Hand', I wanted to design a teaser film using the song to promote the exhibition. At this stage I had established that I wanted to centre my exhibition around Nick Cave’s song lyrics and exchanging of letters with his fans through his website 'The Red Hand Files'. Consequently, this teaser film features a wax stamp and text that oozes like red wax on a page, an element of the exhibition design that symbolises his dedication to writing and sharing of wisdom with others.
My gallery flags bring together all of the design elements used throughout the project, representing the face of the exhibition as it would look on the actual State Library building.
Sexual Health Explainer Video
Moving to a different project, this motion graphic is designed to make sexual health a topic that is digestible and fun to learn about. Utilising heart characters was my way of shifting the tone on sexual health, eliminating the taboo and instead incorporating a sense of cheekiness to help viewers feel comfortable with the content.
My 'Rewear Relove' project emerged from insights gathered through my design research kit (DRK) which explored fashion consumption and the psychology behind why people often by excessive amounts of clothing. After brainstorming a large array of topics to research, fashion stood out to me as I also feel the need to buy new clothes on a regular basis especially before a special occasion or social event. One key finding that stood out to me in my research was that only 16% of my female participants felt comfortable repeating outfits. This highlighted a need to help women feel more confident in the clothes they own which will as a result help reduce fashion consumption.
Rewear Relove Website Tour
In response to my research, I designed a campaign called 'Rewear Relove', developed to bring the fun back into styling outfits from clothes you already own. The campaign’s primary components include a magnet set which encourages users to experiment with accessorising and restyling a basic outfit along with an interactive website. By incorperating vibrant colours and funky textures into my designs, I hope this campaign inspires women to feel more confident about re-wearing and styling their own clothes, ultimately helping to reduce fashion consumption among its audience.
