Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2024

Hello! I'm Venuki, a Communication Design and Interactive Media student with a focus on brand identity, packaging, and print publications. I’m passionate about using design thinking and problem-solving skills to create intuitive solutions that resonate with their target audience. My project, 'Your New Identity Awaits', reflects my love for these design outcomes by exploring the influence of social media and digital platforms on personal identity, consumption, and decision-making. It delves into how algorithms and online trends shape our lives, often leading us to adopt lifestyles choices passively influenced by the content we consume.

Design Research Kit- Magazine

We are constantly influenced by the content we consume, often becoming passive observers rather than active participants. This design research kit dives into that very issue, serving as a stepping stone to the larger activation outcome, ‘Your New Identity Awaits.’ Styled as exclusive PR packages, these boxes were sent to select participants, replicating the thrill of receiving a pre-release product. Inside, the primary feature was the research booklet - designed like an early 2000s magazine- offering insights into the powerful role digital feeds play in shaping identity. It’s a tangible reminder of the curated nature of our digital experiences.

Design Research Kit- Magazine Flip Through

The 16-page magazine takes users on a journey through the world of conspicuous consumption in a playful, relatable way. Starting off lighthearted, the tone and design are crafted to resonate with Generation Z, using current trends and informal language to draw readers in. As the journey progresses, the magazine encourages self-reflection through articles and questionnaires, helping readers to pause and reconsider their relationship with social media and purchasing habits. By the end, it gently pushes users to question their consumption patterns, leaving them more mindful of their digital interactions and the influence on their identity.

Your New identity Awaits- Microsite

The primary outcome for this campaign is a mobile app/ website that acts as a self-reflection and educational tool, allowing users to explore how much their digital identity is shaped by social media algorithms. It offers insights into passive consumption and provide ways to “escape” by making informed, conscious decisions about their online presence and real-life choices. There are 4 sections designed for users from an identity quiz which breaks down their media usage habits, a third place locator where they can find personalised offline locations for them, daily digital detox suggestions and the data gained from the design research kits.

Your New identity Awaits- Card Deck

This card deck offers 52 engaging activities split into two categories: 'Discover' and 'Create'. Each card encourages users to explore different facets of their digital habits and online personas. The 'Discover' cards prompt reflection and self-awareness, helping users analyse how digital media influences their decisions and identity. The 'Create' cards offer hands-on activities to inspire creativity and self-expression, allowing users to actively reshape their digital presence. Together, these cards provide a balanced journey of introspection and empowerment.

In The Mix- State Library Gallery Flags

In The Mix: The Go-Betweens Exhibition' is an experience that delves into the cultural impact and legacy of the Australian indie band, The Go-Betweens. The branding reflects the band’s DIY ethos, blending a sense of nostalgia with modern design elements to capture their influence on the alternative music scene. Through a mix of bold typography, textured visuals, and colour schemes, the design embodies the band’s understated yet profound role in music history. These flags aim to welcome viewers to all that exists inside the exhibition through an air of mystery and bold contrast.

In The Mix- CD Packaging/ Invites

The jewel case exhibition invitations for "In The Mix" are designed to immerse audiences in the essence of The Go-Betweens' era. The front features a striking collage-like cut-out image, accompanied by the bold heading "In The Mix" and the phrase "Now showing for a limited time." The back has a repetitive pattern of "In The Mix" written out four times, creating a rhythmic visual echo. Inside, the event details, including the date, time, and location, are neatly laid out in a simple, almost non-design-like manner. The CD itself is adorned with a flower modify and lyrics from The Go-Between’s albums, all wrapped in a retro-inspired black and yellow palette.
