Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2024

My name is Emme Southey (they/them) and I am a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Naarm. With a base of research in queer theory, my practice explores how queer subcultures and communities utilise an aesthetic spectrum to express a level of belonging and an affirmation of gender, with a specificity surrounding hypermasculinity. My work is influenced by Finnish illustrator Tom of Finland and British sculpture artist Jesse Darling. My practice is informed by the work of Eamon Schlotterback, who writes on the complexities of trans existence under auto-theory.
