My project called Sanctum Novum, meaning 'New Sanctuary' in Latin, involves the development of a new safe and creative haven from its existing form. Building B33 has long been vacant, also known as the 'Hospital for Insane', being a longitudinal hospital ward with large wings on either side. The building has been transformed and reimagined as a new artists-in-residence art gallery including communal spaces, a shop, cafe, studios, multi-purpose rooms, and more.

Statue Terrace

An illustrated perspective view of my gallery terrace design. It cleaves through the added upper floor as an extension of the art gallery separated by giant skylights and filled with greenery, statues, and benches. The new interventions are lined with zinc shingles which add a contemporary nature to them.

Front Facade

An illustrated perspective view of my front, south-facing facade. I had kept the existing entry but roofed with zinc shingles, serving as a remnant of ornate design from the Victorian Era, revived in the 21st century.

1:100 Proposed Section (@ A3 x3)

This long section shows the points of addition after demolition, indicating new spaces such as the art gallery, communal and messy studios, etc. Here, we can also clearly see the abundance of existing footings and their level depending on topography.

1:100 Proposed Plan (@ A3 x3)

The proposed ground plan displays the new spaces created as a result of interventions and adaptive reuse strategies. The gallery in particular was made to be long and generous in wall space for artwork, as well as looping upstairs and back around to avoid stepping on old grounds.

1:50 Detail Perspective Section (@ A3)

This is a section through the art gallery and terrace. Whilst illustrating detail, it additionally shows clear delineation between the existing brick foundation and walls from the new skylight structure that was implemented for proposal. The materials and dimensions are also noted for further clarity.

1:20 Physical Model

This is a photograph taken by me of my physical model. It is cut through one of the large skylights and also through the terrace, showing intricacy for the sculpture gallery mezzanine within and also the contrast between old and new architecture.
