Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2025

The project proposes a Community Office and a Women’s and Family Centre in Kunawarritji. It explores the cultural, social, and environmental context of the Martu people, examining traditional governance structures, land ownership, and community values. The aim is to integrate this knowledge into a design approach that respects Martu culture and supports long-term community resilience. The design considers the spatial relationships between each program zone and their connections to the surrounding context. By responding to existing site conditions, community needs, and environmental factors, the project aims to create a sustainable and culturally responsive architectural proposal.

Daycare and Community Centre

In front of the daycare, a play area is provided for children. Existing trees on the site are preserved and integrated into the design to create natural shading and sun protection. A small garden is placed in front of the Community Centre, offering a comfortable outdoor space where local residents can meet, rest, and engage in community activities.

Courtyard

All buildings are sheltered under a large overarching roof, providing protection from the sun. At the centre of the site, a courtyard with a fire pit, supports evening gatherings, storytelling, and intergenerational interaction between elders, adults, and children.

Flexible Outdoor Spaces

The project incorporates flexible outdoor spaces for community use, creating opportunities for small gatherings and various forms of social interaction.

Floor Plan

The circulation for the daycare, the women’s and young family room, and CHSP users is completely separated from the circulation of the Community Centre. The layout is arranged by considering the spatial relationships between each room, while outdoor spaces are provided throughout the site. The central courtyard serves as a communal gathering space for all users.

Section and Construction

A double-roof system is designed to enhance natural ventilation throughout the building. The design also incorporates elements inspired by Aboriginal art to deter animals from entering the buildings. The structure employs a modular steel frame, allowing for prefabrication and enabling efficient on-site construction.
