As a designer committed to preserving biodiversity, I work at the intersection of the organic and the technical. I am passionate about leveraging the traditional practices of industrial design to construct a future of co-existence.

Bush Cradle is a kit of parts that empowers conservationists to build habitat that is species specific; a universal four tile system that can recreate the complex forms needed for functional habitat across the ecosystem.

Bush Cradle - Pygmy Possum, Ringtail Possum Habitats

Many of Australia’s fauna species depend on niche, complex habitat that can take hundreds of years to form. Being non-renewable, artificial intervention is necessary for the survival of these animals.

To function ecologically, habitat interventions are required to be highly specialised.
Bush Cradle empowers researchers to create the unique refuge solutions needed by Australia's vulnerable native species.

Assembled intuitively, by hand.

Fostering creativity, four different tiles provide endless room for ecological experimentation and modification. Tiles are joined together with a simple pin and slot mechanism to form habitat.

Pins can be removed using a simple pry tool, allowing the tiles to slide out for rearrangement or repair. Laser cut entrance holes allow for closer alignment with the requirements of target species.

Fusing 3D printing and Casting

Biodegradable hemp-crete provides critical insulation and weather protection, supported internally by 3D printed lattice frames.

Created through a combination of digital fabrication and casting, Bush Cradle tiles are highly reproducible whilst remaining organic, durable and insulating.

Eastern Quoll Habitat

Pictured above is a Bush Cradle arranged for the unique denning requirements of an Eastern Quoll, designed to simulate the hollow interior of a fallen old growth log. Informed by research, the structure harbours multiple entrances, turns and heights to promote survival outcomes.

Reptile Habitat

The above arrangement provides the necessary shelter for reptiles to avoid predation. Laser cut galvanised steel plates also create a conductive heat sink, providing cold blooded animals the opportunity to thermoregulate in the sun.
