Demitra Agouras is an emerging artist based in Melbourne. She is a material driven artist working with textiles and installation work that captures, preserves and re-contextualises women’s domestic craft traditions as enduring narratives and living archives. Through using second-hand domestic textiles, Demitra is reclaiming the delicate, discarded, and handmade in a form of preservation through methods of mark making. Her work aims to eternalise the value of women’s work through translating the materials into new forms of pattern and light.

A Soft Monument

Lace projections were traced with oil paint onto second hand textiles capturing the patterns of domestic crafts. These traces were merged with the original materials, evolving into sculptural, free-flowing forms and drapery, resulting in a work that creates a dialogue between past and present.

Domestic Constellation

Second hand crochet and lace textiles are assembled together creating a structure of pattern and light. It explores the connection between materials and space, where light and shadows interact to expose the fragility of the discarded. This reflects the ephemerality of these textiles and links to the erasure of women’s craft and value from the post-modernist era.
