Consumers

A-GLIMMER recently conducted a survey amongst consumers who have had or been offered genetic testing, to explore their views and experiences of the use of genetic information by life insurers. Our findings show consumers continue to experience difficulties accessing life insurance after having genetic testing. The majority believe life insurance companies should not be allowed to use their genetic information in underwriting, and believe the government should introduce legislation to regulate this area. These findings will soon be submitted for publication.

Researchers

Internationally, researchers have previously described the deterrent effect of genetic discrimination fears on research participation. A-GLIMMER will conduct interviews and surveys of researchers in Australia to evaluate their awareness and understanding, and whether the moratorium has had an impact on genomic research study participation.
